📜 A Bit of History

The Fêtes de Bayonne began in 1932, inspired by the famous San Fermín festival in Pamplona, Navarre. It was originally created by members of Aviron Bayonnais, the local rugby club, who wanted to establish a joyful, public celebration during the summer.

From the start, the white outfit with a red sash and scarf became the dress code—quickly adopted by all. The celebration rapidly grew in popularity, becoming one of the largest festivals in France.

Today, the Fêtes de Bayonne are deeply rooted in Basque culture, blending local traditions, music, sport, and gastronomy. The symbolic handover of the city keys, confetti showers, Basque songs and dances are now essential parts of this festive heritage, passed down through generations.

The festival combines Basque tradition, music, gastronomy, and sports. Highlights include:

• 🎈 Opening Ceremony: the mayor hands the city keys to a popular figure from the balcony of the town hall.
